A certification for people who supervise recovery specialists and family recovery specialists. As a CRSS, you support the development of recovery specialists, help them navigate systems and organizational practices, and model ethical, recovery-oriented practice. Current CRSs and CFRSs have a shorter path with no exam.
Is this certification right for me?
It's a fit if you currently provide direct supervision to recovery specialists or family recovery specialists and have at least two years of recovery-focused work experience, including one year supervising.
Consider a different certification if you are not yet supervising (start with the Certified Recovery Specialist or Certified Family Recovery Specialist), or you supervise counselors and clinical staff (see Certified Clinical Supervisor).
Requirements
All requirements must be met and documented before you apply. Some requirements differ depending on whether you already hold a current CRS or CFRS.
Two years of work experience plus one year of supervision
Two years full-time or 4,000 hours part-time. If you hold a current CRS or CFRS, this is experience providing recovery support services; if not, it is work or volunteer experience in a related field focused on recovery culture. Both paths also need one year of direct supervision of recovery specialists or family recovery specialists. All experience must be within the last seven years, and you must be supervising recovery specialists when you apply. Mutual support group time does not count. Document previous jobs with a letter from the employer, not a resume.Current job description
From your current employer, signed and dated by you and your immediate supervisor. It must show supervision of recovery specialists or family recovery specialists as a primary function. An official position description on agency letterhead is also accepted.25 hours of supervision in the CRSS domains
Documented by your supervisor(s) on the supervision page of the application. There are no requirements for who supervises you. Supervision can be formal or informal, face-to-face or online, individual or group.Education and training in the CRSS domains
Current CRS or CFRS: 30 hours specific to the CRSS domains. Everyone else: the 78-hour standardized recovery specialist training plus 12 hours specific to the CRSS domains (from any source). Document training with certificates that show your name, the title, dates, hours and the training organization.High school diploma or GED
Documentation is needed only if you do not hold a current CRS or CFRS. Veterans may provide discharge documentation instead, and a college degree also counts.Current CRS or CFRS (shorter path only)
If you apply as a current CRS or CFRS, you must keep that credential current and valid.Notarized acknowledgements and release
The release page of the application must be notarized and sent with your application.Live or work in Pennsylvania
At the time you apply. The CRSS is a non-reciprocal credential recognized only in Pennsylvania.Pass the CRS exam (if you are not a current CRS or CFRS)
Taken after your application is approved. Current CRSs and CFRSs do not take an exam.

If you hold a current CRS or CFRS, there is no exam. Everyone else takes the CRS exam: 50 multiple-choice questions in 1.5 hours, on demand online or on paper at an in-person location. It covers recovery planning and collaboration; substance use knowledge; advocacy; ethical responsibility and professionalism; safety and self-care; communication, interpersonal and professional skills; and cultural competency.
If you don't pass, you can retest, up to three retakes. Online exam information · Retest form
Need an accommodation for a disability or religious obligation? Request it in writing, with documentation, at least 60 days before your exam.
The CRSS domains
Your training and supervision must cover the four CRSS domains:
- Recovery specialist development
- Advocacy and system navigation
- Organizational practices
- Ethical responsibility and professionalism
Supervision should be administrative, educative and supportive: a collaborative activity in which you guide and support recovery specialists to deliver competent, ethical services.
Keeping your certification current
The CRSS renews every two years, plus the renewal fee.
- Current CRS or CFRS: 6 hours specific to the supervision of recovery specialists. These can count toward the 30 hours you need to renew your CRS or CFRS.
- Everyone else: 30 hours, including 6 hours specific to the supervision of recovery specialists, 6 hours in ethics, 3 hours in confidentiality and 15 hours relevant to the field.
Recertification requirements and fees
Since January 1, 2026 there is no "lapsed" status: a credential is active or expired.
Common questions about the CRSS
I'm already a CRS or CFRS. Do I take an exam for the CRSS?
No. Current CRSs and CFRSs do not take an exam. You need 30 hours of training in the CRSS domains instead of the 78-hour training plus 12 hours, and you must keep your CRS or CFRS current.
Who can provide my 25 hours of CRSS supervision?
PCB has no requirements for the person who supervises you. It can be someone within your organization or another professional. Supervision can be formal or informal, face-to-face or online, individual or group, and must be documented.
Does time in mutual support groups count toward CRSS work experience?
No. Time spent participating in or facilitating mutual support groups does not count toward the work experience requirement.
